One old and one unusual

11 Sep 2006

A couple of interesting things found on eBay:

First there is a copy of Italie septentrionale 2 (1863), which we haven't registered on BDKR before - it is possibly in a reasonable state but there is no picture of the cover, which might be an indication...

Then there is also a Greece 4 (1909), which is not so dramatically rare, but this one is interesting because it has the coat of arms of the Cunard Steamship Co embossed in gold on the front cover - clearly a special job for the Cunard liners. I had heard of such versions of the US and Canada editions before, but not for Greece. In fact, I associated early 20th-c. Cunard with North Atlantic liner traffic only - but it turns out I was wrong: see this link which talks about their Mediterranean cruises in 1910. This edition may well have been made for that very programme - alternatively, it may of course have been supplied to American travellers coming over to "do Europe". Either way, an interesting piece of travel history.
