Baedekeriana

15 Sep 2006

There is a postcard for sale on eBay (here) from Karl Wilberg in Athens to Adolph Baedeker in Bonn. Wilberg published the interesting Athens extracts in three languages (in the Hinrichsen 'S' series, not covered on this site), taken from the Southern Italy books (which had "an excursion to Athens" in them).

And who, then was Adolph Baedeker? I think that must have been Karl's younger brother, who was also in the book business. Wilberg addresses him as "dear Uncle Adolph" so that would make sense with the respective ages of the correspondents.

You can read more about Adolph B. in an article in Reiseleben on this site. (Actually, he was called Gustav Adolph - after the Swedish king, who was not a hero to all Germans - but obviously to the Baedeker family.)

The postcard is just a postcard, but interesting as Baedekeriana. You need to be pretty good at deciphering 19th-c. German handwriting to read it, too...
