Baedeker trivia

3 Jan 2008

The once rather august Daily Telegraph has spotted that (modern) Baedekers will once again be sold in the UK (having been off the market for some years). Though their sub-editors have managed to get the spelling correct in most places, the picture caption (as well as the actual URL) still leaves something to be desired. But it's a nice picture of a classic Baedeker.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, the slightly less elevated, but rather more dedicated (to the readership, I mean) Delphos Herald (Delphos is a city in Ohio) looks back at the year 2007 and remembers how, in February "sixth-grader Teresa Pohlman ... made a good showing at the Allen County Spelling Bee ... [taking] second place out of 18 spellers, going down in round 14 when she misspelled 'Baedeker', a German word for guidebooks." (My italics.) Maybe we need to have a go at their sub-editors, too.
