Framed correspondence of GD Baedeker

25 Apr 2008

There is a lot of two framed letters (here) on eBay, which are said to be of the "Baedeker Verlag". This is true, but it's not the Baedeker house that we normally deal with - it's the business founded by Karl Baedeker's father in Essen, whose main business was printing rather than publishing. Indeed, they did much of the printing for early Baedeker guides.

The letters are probably interesting - it's an exchange with a maker of bijouteries (costume jewellery), and the seller's pictures are very good - but I find the handwriting extremely difficult to decipher! Both writers refer to each other as "Lieber Gustav"... but from then on it's just guesswork for me - especially the letter from Gustav Kühn of the Kühn Brothers seems an exercise in beautiful but utterly unreadable calligraphy. Would anybody like to have a go at working out the content?
