Correspondence deciphered (part 1)

29 Apr 2008

Thanks to Mr Andreas de Bettignies-Dutz, we have a deciphered version of the first letter:

20. Nobr 1891
Lieber Gustav!
Uhm auf dein heute eingetroffenes Schreiben
vom 18. ds. Mts. weiter einzugehen, teile ich dir
mit, daß wir durchaus nicht gesonnen sind,
dir noch weitere Sonderzugeständnisse zu
machen, als bisher geschehen ist!
Deine Schriftstücke gebe ich dir daher hiermit
zurück und ersuche dich numehr um
sofortige Rücksendung der beiden Graphen
des Vergleichs sowie meiner Entwürfe des
Schuldscheines und der Bürgschaft,
sei es ohne Eure Unterschrift.
dein Schwager,
Gust. Baedeker

And in Mr de Bettignies-Dutz's excellent English translation:

20 Nov. 1891
Dear Gustav,
To come back to your letter from the 18th of the month that arrived today, I tell you herewith, that we certainly don't intend to give you further special concessions beyond what was done until now.
Therefore I herewith do return your documents to you and do ask you to send back immediately both graphs of the settlement as well as my drafts of the certificate of debt and of the loan guarantee, even without your signature.
your brother in law
Gust. Baedeker

Now that sounds like a fairly definite NO to me... But we still can't quite work out what the reply was, so there is still room for more deciphering work!
