Stats after 21,000 sales

15 Sep 2010

So today we reached 21,001 records of completed sales from eBay and other sites in the BDKR database.

As we usually do after each 1,000 sales, here is a quick presentation of the vital statistics:

The sales have resulted from 40,153 auctions started, so the success ratio (i.e., auctions resulting in a sale) is 52.30%, still trending downwards ever so slightly. The number of successful auctions per month continues to fall, and is now at 283.5, from 292 after 20,000 sales. This is, I think, an indication of slower business on the auction sites, though it is also true that I tend to skip some very unlikely auctions, occasionally.

There are 1049 different editions and variants listed separately at BDKR.com. Of those 955 have appeared in at least one successful sale, a number which has not changed since 20,000 was reached. This is the first time we haven't added any never-before seen editions in a set of 1,000 sales - when shall we find the remaining 94 (or, perhaps, 91 - see previous discussions about this)? Of the 955 editions seen, 70 (75) have appeared once only.

Generalgouvernement has lost its pole positions as most sold edition to Great Britain 7 (1910). Generalgouvernment now has 159 sales (last time 154), while the English-language usurper has reached 165 from a mere 153 last time. The best-selling French edition is as before Sud-Est de la France 9 (1910), now on 77 sales (76 last time). Of the 21,001 books, 9220 (43.9%) were in German, 8922 (42.5%) in English and 2859 (13.6%) in French - a slight loss (0.2% points) of market share for the French editions. So it remains a steady rule, as it has from inception, that out of seven sold books, three are in German, three in English and one in French.

The total sale price for the books was €699,460.69, giving an average price of €33.31, which also continues a very slowly falling trend. If all the books had gone for their BDKR guideline price, the total sales would have been €1,740,365, so the ratio is now down to 40.2% from the previous 40.5%.

The average number of bids per sold book remains at 5.2. As ever, just treat these stats as a bit of fun - nothing to take too seriously. They also appear in shortened form every day on the stats page. If you'd like some other data, please feel free to ask!
