| News itemsAnother view of Baedeker2 May 2011 We are quite used to seeing the portraits of Karl Baedeker as a middle-aged successful businessman and publisher, but here is a link to an auction (on 13 May) in Cologne of a portrait of KB as a young man in 1827. It was painted by Johann Heinrich Richter, a Koblenz painter of portraits of some note, and contemporary with KB. The estimate is for €6,500-7,000 so it's not for impulse buying, but it certainly looks like an accomplished and insightful portrait by a friend of another toiler in the cultural vineyards of the Rhineland. | |||||||||
