Mobile app for travellers

31 Jan 2012

It looks like Mair Dumont, the present owners of the Baedeker name, are getting into the mobile app field.

A recent press release states:

"LatitudeN and MAIRDUMONT today announced the establishment of a partnership to integrate high-quality touristic information into the smart travel solutions to be developed by the technology company LatitudeN GmbH. The innovative mobile travel, Farol City Guides, marks the beginning of this collaboration."

and

"This intelligent app not only generates fully personalised tours, but also adapts real-time to the user’s profile. Therefore, and unlike any other travel app currently on the market, Farol City Guides optimises time spent on a city, absorbing the most relevant sightseeing information that matches the traveller’s real preferences."

Now while I am a fan of mobile apps up to a point, and I can see the logic of having something on my phone telling me what I might like to see in the vicinity of where I am just now, I really do dislike the "Big Brother" aspect of this. Collecting my personal interests and combining that with my present location, based on the GPS? Far too intrusive for me.
