Proposal for a change

6 Aug 2012

The reason the Indien mentioned in the previous post was not picked up, was because it was not in auction, but available for a fixed price. Having looked into things a bit more, it seems to me that many more classic Baedekers are now available for sale at a fixed price, than are offered for auction.

Of course, here at bdkr.com, we have only so far recorded books at auction, in order to be able to ascertain what the market prices actually are. (Fixed price sales do not give the same feel for the precise market value, as you might imagine.) After 25,000 records (plus perhaps 10,000 or so books reviewed before the site got going), the market prices are fairly well established already.

But as a result, many available books do not get reported on the site, and the disadvantage of this may now be out-weighing the advantage of having constantly updating price information (as it doesn't change much anyway).

I therefore propose to change the reporting of books for sale, to show also books available on fixed price (while indicating the format), and reduce the detailed price information, and perhaps replace it with a "Baedeker index" which could show comparative price changes over a period (a bit like stock market indices).

What do you think? Please write in with your views to the usual address. I may not answer individually to every e-mail, but promise to take them all into account. Let's say that we put this proposal out on consultation for the next four weeks, giving you (and me) some time to think over the implications.

I look forward to hearing from you!
