What price Russie?

5 Sep 2005

Back again from a long weekend in Paris... not just leisure, but professional work too.

Anyway, managed to get a wander along the bouquinistes on the left bank - where my own modest Baedeker collection once started. There are quite a few editions to be found, mostly of the more frequent kind. Generally speaking, these can be had at reasonable prices, but of course, you do need to check the contents for completeness. The books are often wrapped in cellophane, but you are invariably allowed - even encouraged - to unwrap them.

Also, some of the bouquinistes do have rare editions tucked away and will happily show you if you ask or show interest in Baedekers.

One of the guys had a Russie 3 (1902), which he said was complete. However, the main overview map was loose and the binding had given up. So how much did he want for this? EUR380. Well I think some haggling could have brought the price down under 300, but it was still too much I'm afraid...

Anyway, it makes for an interesting walk and the weather was marvellous! Highly recommended, next time you're in Paris on a weekend.
