Generalgouvernement dethroned

3 Oct 2008

A remarkable thing has happened: Generalgouvernment is no longer the most sold Baedeker in our archives! It has held the top position since we started, but today we record the 123rd sale of Italy from the Alps to Naples 2 (1909) (which might be called the "Room with a View" edition, though that novel actually appeared in 1908, so maybe the 1904 edition is more appropriately so named).

Anyway, it has always struck me as amazing that Generalgouvernement should be so frequently appearing - but this year, the supply has almost dried up. Why might this be? Did somebody find a great stash of GGs some years ago, and started selling them off slowly, in order not to drive the price down? And is that stash now finally sold out? A mystery...

Pesaro map

While we are on the subject of Italy, a reader has written in to ask if anybody knows which was the first edition of Central Italy and Rome (or perhaps, in the German or French equivalents) in which a map of Pesaro appears? It exists in the 1909 edition (the fifteenth) but had it appeared earlier?

All information gratefully received.
