16000 auction results

5 Oct 2008

Today we have reached 16,006 recorded sales, so here is the usual statistical rundown.

These sales result from 29,692 auctions started, so the success ratio (i.e., auctions resulting in a sale) is 53.9%, a relatively significant decrease from 54.5% after 15,000 sales. The number of successful auctions per month has dropped over the summer, and is now below 316 from about 322 last time. Is this a sign of holiday inertia, perhaps?

There are 1049 different editions and variants listed separately at BDKR.com Of those 943 (937 after 15,000 sales) have appeared in at least one successful sale, and of those, 93 (91) have appeared once only.

As mentioned before, Generalgouvernement is no longer the most sold edition, although at 122 sales (last time 119), it remains the most sold German edition. Among the English-language editions, Italy from the Alps to Naples 2 (1909) is the most sold of all Baedekers, with 123 sales, while the best-selling French edition is as before Sud-Est de la France 9 (1910) on 60 sales (55). Of the 16,006 books, 6935 (43.3%) were in German, 6816 (42.6%) in English and 2255 (14.1%) in French - pretty much unchanged proportions. So you can still say that, out of seven sold books, three are in German, three in English and one in French.

The total sale price for the books was €563,237.19, giving an average price of €35.19, continuing a very slowly falling trend. If all the books had gone for their BDKR guideline price, the total sales would have been €1,326,950, so the ratio is continuing to edge down to 42.4% from the previous 43.0%. This shows, I think, a slightly falling trend in the market.

The average number of bids per sold book has just crept down to 5.3 from 5.4. But there's not really much in that statistic - nor anything to take very seriously in the rest of them! If you'd like some other data, please feel free to ask!
